TALK BRANDS #6: LENG CLOTHING

Week 6, and the brands just don't stop! Throughout the process of speaking to people for our Talk Brands collective, I am well and truly proud of how many independent brands that the UK has to offer. We most definitely are high in quantity, and in quality of our home grown labels. This week we're getting an insight from Phil Batchelor, 21, from Leng Clothing. Leng   is a independent streetwear clothing line from the South East of England, currently based in Canterbury, Kent. Let's get stuck in shall we....

Where did Leng all begin and what made you want to run your own brand?
Leng all begun back in year one of my graphic design degree, me and my friends in the class always spoke about starting our own clothing line and and where all really up for it, so one day at home i thought fuck it, im gunna start to design a logo for a clothing line concept and see what it looks like. Around the same time, for some strange reason i always said "Peng a Leng" as a joke and i thought i can't call it that and then just said Leng by it self and it just stuck and that's where the name and the reason behind why i started Leng clothing

How would you describe Leng?
Difficult question, that could easily be answered by calling it a streetwear brand but i believe it's a lot more than that, from studying graphic design i take everything into consideration, i dont just put a random typeface on a tee and think yeah, people will buy that, it's all about where the design comes from, the thought behind the work i do for leng and then appreciating it when you see people all around the world wearing my work.

What is your favourite piece from your collection?
Easy question, the Leng Grime tee, the second time i have released this tee and both times sell the hottest and is easily the most common tee you will ever see me rock.

If you could sum up your brand in 3 words, what would they be?
Urban, Clean and innovative.

What for you has been the highlight of running Leng to date?
I would have to say when i got my first international sale, when i first started i was really worried it wouldn't work but i guess getting that first international sale relived me a bit.

What do you do outside Leng?
Well i finished my degree yesterday so nothing now i guess haha, time to enjoy the summer and get a solid summer range out and then knuckle back down to life after summer, either way, big things are happening at Leng this year.

What is your favourite clothing brand, other than your own?
Independent clothing brand wise, Whyme London, always had a huge love for what Charlie and Simon have been doing! Started following them in the Myspace days so running a solid brand now!

Favourite brand of footwear?
Easy, Nike, my love for trainers is to much if im honest haha

Who would you most like to do a collaboration with and why?
Would have to say Whyme London, always had a love for their design work and products.

What can we expect to see from Leng in the future?
Planning big things for the rest of the year! Look forward to a huge summer range and some naughty new products

What, in your opinion, is the best thing about running your own brand?
I guess its the feeling you get when you sit and think about the fact that hundreds of people all over the world are wearing clothes that you designed.

What advice would you give to someone who may want to start their own brand?
It's far from easy and there is a lot more to think about then just printing a t-shirt and trying to sell it, get a solid idea and test it and see if it works

Anything else you'd like to add?
Not really, just a thanks to you for asking me to do this interview, enjoyed it a lot, made me think about the history of Leng and how far the brand has come! So go check out the brand! Check out others and support independent streetwear brands! Safe x
